I wanted to switch my contact management from OpenXChange/Outlook to Outlook.com/Outlook. I'm using Outlook 2013 (15.0.4615.1000) on Windows 8.
I followed the steps described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2844991/en-us and copied all contacts from local Outlook folder to the contact folder of my outlook.com account.
I turned out, that the contacts were synced, but the birthday date for all of them was gone. Even manually entering the date in Outlook did not fix it.
How-I-fixed-it:
- Export all contacts to a csv-file from Outlook
- Manually import the contacts from the csv-file in outlook.com
This blog is about problems i encountered in everyday life and how i fixed them or worked around them. Sometimes i also just post things to let people out there know about something i think it might be of interest for others than me....

How to disable all animations in a PowerPoint presentation? / How to advance slides manually? / Präsentation ohne Animationen anzeigen?
Today i was asked, how to disable all animations in a PowerPoint presentation and how to manually change slides.
The presentation had some timings set up to automatically switch slides after some time and i wanted to disable this.
How-I-fixed-it:
I found the right hints here: http://www.worldstart.com/disable-animations-in-powerpoint/
Go to "Set up show". Under "Options" check "Presentation without Animation" and unter "Advance slides" select "Manually"
Here's the screenshot of the german Version "Bildschirmpräsentation einrichten", "Präsentation ohne Animation", "Nächste Folie Manuell"

Outlook 2013 Folder Pane empty / blue / gone / no folders after September Office Update caused by KB2817630 patch
Recently, opening my Outlook 2013, the folder pane was empty. Indeed, it looked not really to be empty. It was filled with blue color and the was some mouseover effect happening moving the pointer over it.
How-i-fixed-it:
It turned out, that the September update of Office Software can cause this issue in case a certain combination of Outook.exe and mso.dll happens. It's the KB2817630 patch causing the problem in case the August Cumulative update is NOT installed on the Computer.
Here's what the TechNet blog says:
"Due to a version incompatibility between outlook.exe and mso.dll, a mismatched reference to a data structure causes the “Minimize” button in the navigation
pane to render incorrectly, typically extremely large to the point that the navigation pane is "invisible" to the user. The issue only manifests when incompatible versions of outlook.exe and mso.dll exist on the system."
It only happes to:
Office 2013 Standard
Office 2013 Professional Plus
Here's a good description, how to fix it: http://blogs.technet.com/b/office_sustained_engineering/archive/2013/09/11/outlook-folder-pane-disappears-after-installing-september-2013-public-update.aspx
Where can you find the Outlook.exe and mso.dll Version Information?
Go to File -> Office Account -> Info about Outlook

Outlook 2013 busy/freeze after startup because of OXtender 2, Start in safe mode
After startup, as soon as OXtender 2 started to sync with the server, my Outlook 2013 did not respond any more (Windows 8, 64 bit, Office 32 bit, OXtender 7.0.64).
How-I-fixed-it:
I managed to start Outlook in safe mode by pressing CRTL-Key on startup as described here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/about-office-safe-mode-HP003082393.aspx
I disabled the OXtender 2 AddIn to check, if this is causing the problem. Without the AddIn, Outlook starts OK.
I did a backup of my data and then recreated the service again using the OXtender Support Tool (C:\Program Files (x86)\Open-Xchange\OXtender 2 for Microsoft Outlook\Profile).
After that, Outlook starts fine again and synchronized with the server.

Office 365, Outlook 2013: OpenXChange OXTender 2 MAPI Mail profile error "oxstor.dll" could not be loaded
Today i installed Office 365 in parallel to my existing Office 2010 on my Windows 8 Computer. Under Outlook 2010 i use OpenXChange OXTender 2 - Version 7.0.62 to sync with OpenXChange Groupware.
After installing Outlook i created a new mail profile. But in Outlook 2013 i can't open the MAPI Folder. Clicking on it an error message Pops up "The Folder could not be expanded.... MAPI was unable to load the Information service "oxstor.dll" ..."
I also re-installed OXTender, but this did not fix it. Under Outlook 2010 the sync is still working fine.
I posted the question here:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_365hp-outlook/cant-sync-outlook-2013-with-openxchange-because-of/f87f287c-e62a-4e5b-994c-da90769bf00c

How-i-fixed-it:
The document Outlook OXtender 2 Best Practices states, that it does not work having both Office 2013 and 2013 installed in parallel:
...
Please note that the following is not supported:
I removed Office 2010 from my Computer and re-installed Outlook OXTender again, created a new profile and... it works.
